What are some of your favorite and least favorite villager houses (excluding starters)?
Some of my absolute favorites from residents on my island so far include Tiffany's casino/diner style house, Fang's classy setup, Skye's comfy and warm abode, Stitches' toy room, and Dobie's library. Dobie's house in particular has such a special feel to it that not many other houses can emulate. I also love Ankha's ancient/regal house and Tangy's fruit extravaganza! I don't necessarily hate any houses, but I wasn't too big on Bam's gym house or Graham's geeky tech area. Along with those, I've never had Katt or Hazel, but their actual houses feel barren and bland to me. Mira's doesn't seem too great either.
My employer is hosting two 300 person dinners, all indoors, not distanced, tonight. They have been patting themselves on the back for their protocols that "exceed CDC recommendations", which they don't follow. Now this. 300 people in a room, eating, followed by 300 more, minutes later in the same room. Casinos can do what they want I guess.

Night shifts for shops, diners, infirmary, casinos?
New player here. I heard night shifts are generally not good but should I be running night shifts in the above service type buildings? I am seeing quite a few "no available service" and "had an unprepared meal" despite having workers in those buildings during both day shifts.
What is Reno becoming, and what do you want it to become?
I'm from Reno, born and raised. Moved away about 10 years ago, but always think about it and I visit almost yearly. I know a lot of people like the new look of Reno, and it being more "cultured or trendy" like Portland, Denver, or the bay. But I feel like everyone is taking away the actual charm and uniqueness of Reno. Reno to me has always been the weird culmination of glitz, glam, little Vegas crap and then cool outdoors, Tahoe, awesome shows on the way to the bay, artistic. Now it feels like when I go to any other bigger city and see their "sodasopa". (And I'm obviously referring to midtown, which I still laugh when I hear it because it sounds so un-reno imo). I know Reno was and has been a depressing shithole in some aspects, but that's where the uniqueness comes out. I just really hope they don't get rid of all the 24/7 diners, cheap ugly casinos, and the actual character of the city. I understand some improvements, but it will just be Sacramento 2 if you get rid of all the character. And screw that. I educate people all the time on Reno, because most think of Reno 911. And tell them, it's nothing like Vegas because it doesn't want to be. It's a unique combo of beautiful mountains, art in line with the bay, and old gambling. Which makes it a treasure I hope we never lose. Sorry for the rant lol. But I am genuinely curious what you all want Reno to be. Edit: I just always hoped Reno would be viewed and turned into the west coast equivalent of New Orleans to an extent. That is a sketchy dirty place that has its charm, which I feel Reno at least used to have.

In P12, Sarah Palmer lost it in the grocery store, scaring the young clerks. Things unravelled fast, and then she ran out.
Sarah: "Find the car key. Find the car key. Get the car key. Get the car ... get the goddamn car key!"
Later in the episode, Hawk went to see what was going on with Sarah. As he walked to the door, we got a good look of the street in front of the house. There was no car parked there except Hawk's own. The Palmer's house was on a small hill, and it didn't have a garage, so they had kept the car on the street in front of it. We were reminded of this in the FWWM flashback in P17 when Laura ran to James's motorbike, and Leland's 1975 Chevrolet Caprice Classic was parked on the street in the same place where Cooper parked his Lincoln in the finale. Sarah was home, but there was no car, so apparently she didn't have one. A frail alcoholic like Sarah wasn't expected to have a car anyway, so something else was going on with the car keys. She wasn't talking about her own keys or even about her own car. In P3, someone else was trying to find car keys. Cooper had just emerged from a socket in Las Vegas, but wasn't really functional, so Dougie's lady friend Jade needed to put on his "damn shoes". Then she got another worry.
Jade: "You do have your keys, right?"
She searched his pockets but there were no car keys.
Jade: "You mean Jade has to give you two rides?"
Then they got going with Jade's car. Dougie's 2000 Ford Taurus was left on the driveway. There was a shot of its back. Its register plate number was "DUGE LV". What would any of that have got to do with Sarah Palmer? Just as things started to get out of hand in the store, she seemed to give the clerks an ominous warning.
Sarah: "Your room seems different - and men are coming."
The first part sounded like a throwback to an odd Fire Walk with Me: Missing Piecesscene in which Cooper told an off-screen Diane that she "had changed something in this room". Then he triumphantly realized she had "moved that clock 12 inches to the left". Watch carefully. Watching carefully, what had changed in the grocery store was the position of the card reader's pen that was now on the left side of the reader whereas it had earlier been strangely sticking out of it. When it was briefly shown in its original position, there was just one line of dialog.
Sarah: "Uh, could I have a carton of Salems, please?"
So, were we supposed to do something with that? A carton of Salems. Perhaps this wasn't blatant tobacco product placement but yet another one of Lynch's anagrams. If so, it sure works as one, and easily so.
A CARTON OF SALEMS NAMES OF A LOST CAR
Coincidently, this was another connection to the scene when Jade was trying to find Dougie's car keys. That car went missing - or at least Janey-E had no idea where it was - and then it was literally lost for good when it blew up in P5. Then in P6, when the officers were inspecting the scene, they found its register plate on the neighbor's roof. A Patrol Officer climbed up the ladder to read it aloud.
Names of a lost car. There were five names in total, "union" not being a name. They were all names of men, which seems to be what Sarah meant with "men are coming". So, we got a list of names now:
David, George, Edward, Lincoln, Victor
Just as Sarah said, "and men are coming", the male clerk credited as Bag-boy came to attention. He wanted to be coming, too? We could see from his name tag that he was Oscar. Including him on the list of names would then complete it as:
David, George, Edward, Lincoln, Victor, Oscar
Since the names were used for a register plate, let's reconvert them to one:
If this was as intended, the whole thing would have been set up just to switch the letter "U" to "O". There apparently was an amusing "checksum" that this indeed was as intended. In P13, the episode that followed, Norma reprimanded her brand handler Walter that she had given other diners her exact recipes and how her ingredients were expected to be "natural, organic, local". On her way out, Sarah passed a sign "LOCAL" that was hanging above the window. The beef jerky package promoted it as "natural". At 10:41, Sarah turned briefly to look at a sign selling "artisan" bread that often implies traditional ingredients and methods. All this got its meaning from Walter's innocent remark.
Walter: "Norma, I assure you they're following your recipes to the letter --"
Indeed, we followed the "recipes" to the letter. Let's bake it next. The updated set of letters works as an anagram for:
When Sarah had run out, Oscar got his only line of dialog.
Bag-boy: "I know where she lives. I can d-deliver them. I guess."
In P14, James and Freddie - "that gloved freak", as Chad called him in P15 - were waiting for delivery.
Freddie: "Okay, Jimmy. We got one more delivery, and then it's hit the Roadhouse."
Freddie then told a story how he had got that mysterious green rubber glove stuck in his right hand that gave his arm "the power of an enormous pile driver". Then James left him, reminding him of the delivery.
James: "You wait for the delivery. Don't forget to sign the invoice. I'm gonna go check the furnaces."
Later in P17, as Freddie and BOB were dueling it out, BOB hissed him an odd remark.
BOB: "Catch you ... with my death bag."
It looked like that what little screen time the grocery store Bag-boy got, it was used to link him to Freddie with one of Return's hairiest riddles. But since the Bag-boy himself had only a fleeting presence in the story, he needed to link somewhere else to make the connection meaningful. That brings us to the pen that stuck out of the card reader that was in the same position as the pen on Ben's desk later in the episode, apparently used to link together Ben and Richard Horne and Supervisor Burns of Silver Mustang Casino.
The picture of the blackfoot tribesmen on the front page got me thinking today, does anyone else think that businesses that use the Blackfoot name are appropriating Blackfoot/Siksika culture?
You got Blackfoot DineInn/Casino/Motorsports and more and yeah they are next to Blackfoot trail (which I'm cool with since a road name is not a for-profit business and more-so meant to honour the people who were here before), but these businesses are profiting off the cultural and ethnic etymology of another entire group of people and it's kinda fucked up when you think about. I suppose you could make the same argument for more prominent examples like this such as the Chicago Blackhawks, which many have already done.
Me and a some gravy encoutered a vegetarian in our restaurant - didn't turn out as expected
First, I don't have anything against vegans or vegetarians as long as they are not trying to missionize people or shame them for eating meat. Second, english is not my first language so please, just ignore my mistakes if I have made any. And I tend to long storys, so sorry about that. So, now here is the story. It happened to me while I was working as a server at my parents hotel restaurant. Two women came in, I seated them, took their drink order, everything was perfectly fine. When I came back to take the food order the younger one told me she was a vegetarian. Okay... here is the reason why I am not overly excited about having vegtarians or vegans in the restaurant. As I said at the beginning, I don't have anything against their diet choice, but we are a restaurant that is specialized for game meat dishes. We have some veggie and even one or two vegan options, but just a few and some vegetarians/vegans are taking this as some kind of offense or getting upset about the small selection of dishes they can eat (which I don't get, because they should know what kind of restaurant we are). But anyways, I was glad she told me, because we serve some bread with a dip before the meals and this dip is made from duck spread (I don't know if this is the right word for it), but yes, it's made from animals. When someone orders a veggie dish I also usually ask if the person is a vegetarian, because of course we have a veggie dip option for them prepared. So, she told me and I got the bread with the vegetarian dip. Then she ordered the saddle of venison (first I got confused) and then added that she wanted it served without the venison. What? Took me some time to figure out that she wanted just the side orders from that dish. She told me another three to four times that she is a vegetarian and could't eat the meat and made a pretty big deal out of it. I got a little annoyed but yeah, it happens and I stayed friendly and polite while I nodded and told her there won't be any meat. The other woman thankfully ordered some normal dish and was obviously no vegetarian, because she ordered meat. I informed the kitchen and they started to prepare the weird venison without venison dish. Exactly as I told them... and because they had been stressed and hadn't thought about it, the kitchen prepared all the side dishes for the venison which included the sauce/gravy for the venison which of course contains meat. It is served in a sauce boat, so there was no sauce on the plate. Stressed and in a hurry (we had been fully booked that night) I just picked up everything without thinking and brought it out to the table. The moment I was about to set down the sauce boat it hit me. I apologised, explained to the customer that I had accidetally brought out the sauce for the venison which she couldn't eat because it was made with meat and that I would take it right back to the kitchen. I started to offer some veggie sauces in case she wanted some for the side dishes but she declined and told me to leave the venison sauce at the table. Well, I thought, maybe the other woman wants it, so I told them that I hope they enjoy their meal and left. Next time I passed their table the vegetarian woman had drowned her veggie side dishes in meat sauce. I said nothing. Why? Just why?
Zodiac's Message In The Misspelling of Words and The Mistakes He Made In Letters.
Zodiac meticulously hand drew his ciphers, but his handwritten letters were sometimes sloppy and often contained spelling errors. Theories about the misspelled words vary. But I think they do have a purpose. I was looking at the dragon card message when I realized the obvious. Zodiac was meticulous with his correspondence. Nothing was included that wasn't meant to be there. Because he put in so much effort, he wouldn't have allowed for any mistakes. If you read the message you will notice that he misspells a word, only to spell it correctly a couple lines down. So he knows how to spell correctly. There are no mistakes in any of those letters. The misspellings are meant to be there because they serve a purpose. 1) The first mistake is the last word of Line 6 - "butons". Now, if you write the correct spelling "Buttons" above "butons" and cross out the matching letters in each word, you are left with a "T". 2) The next mistake you will come to isn't a misspelled word, but contains one. The Zodiac is talking about all of the buttons he sees people around San Fran wearing. One of his examples is "Melvin eats bluber". The Melvin Belli reference aside, this was a mistake. There never were any Melvin eats blubber buttons. The buttons actually said "Melville eats blubber". So, write that above his mistake and cross out the letters that occur in both words. You will get N, L, L, E, B. 3) Next is the word "considerbly" which will give you an A. 4) Then another "Buton" which will give you a T. 5) Lastly for this message, another "Melvin's", which will give you N, L, L, E. So all together you have ( T N LLE B A T N LLE ) You can make that into several things. I first saw the last name of one of the prime Zodiac suspects, Arthur Lee Allen. Remember, Arthur Lee Allen lived with his mother, whose name was Bernice Allen. B Allen? TELL B ALLEN NT BALLET or BATTLE? It may just be nonsense. But there are obvious clues in the letters besides the ciphers. For Instance, the 13 cipher with the map of Mt. Diablo. The 13 cipher uses letters and symbols from the face of a 1968 Zodiac Watch Company Sea Wolf watch. Now, Zodiac drew the watch company's symbol (his symbol) of the circle and cross over Mt. Diablo. He then wrote 0, 3, 6, 9 and "Set to Mag. N." next to the 0. (FYI, a model of the Sea Wolf had a compass N,E,S,W dial around the face). So, the 3,6,9 are all in the correct place where they would appear on the watch face. BUT THE 0! The 0 is where the 12 o'clock should be. I think there may have been a 0 on the ring around the watch face as well, but can't remember. Now, in the same letter Zodiac drew his circle and cross with "-12". He was saying there wasn't a 12, there was a 0. Because Zodiac -12 SFPD - 0. Was this his location in relation to the SFPD and not his body count? Also, the South Lake Tahoe letter and victim Lass. She worked at a casino there. In the 13 Cipher, you can clearly see that the first word plainly says C A S I N × O. The message on the postcard in question said "Peek through the pines". Could he have meant, "Peak through the pines", as in mountain peak? Zodiac had said that the cipher related to radians and inches on a map. The first and last letters of this cipher are C and G. In geometry, C represents radians, G represents gradians. I am not extremely proficient in math, but I can't see where it actually does represent what he says it does. I think he was lying..Go figure. A while back I took a different approach to the 340 or 408 Cipher, can't remember which one I used at the time, and I lost everything because that computer crashed. I have an anger issue with computers. I punch them too much, which greatly affects their performance. But all of the symbols used are actually astrological symbols that, in turn, represent specific numbers. They are symbols that are used to make a person's astrological chart, like for the moment they were born. It gets difficult tracking down the meaning of each symbol when you know nothing about astrology. But, I went one symbol at a time and replaced them with their numeric value and it actually read real coordinates of longitude and latitude. The first coordinate was a place in Northern California, near the Nevada Border, by the Scott Warner Wilderness Area. I only finished the first two lines, so I don't know if it would have lead to something of actual importance. But I think it would have been just another dead end or another puzzle. All of the tangents, leads, and circumstantial evidence can lead you in so many different directions. I know a lot of people were very excited when they discovered the 1952 Tim Holt Red Mask comic book. The issue that featured Lady Doom and the Wheel of Death. The wheel listed ways to die, like "Death by Knife", "Death by Gun", "Death by Rope". So the Zodiac's message scratched into the car door at Lake Berryessa appears to be directly linked to the comic. People began looking at Tim Holt. But even more curious was the illustrator of the comic book, Frank Bolle. He signed his initials in the artwork "FWB" in a way that is extremely similar to one of the symbols designs Zodiac used later on (not in a cipher). Frank Bolle wrote a comic strip in 1971 called Alexander Gates. The character was an astrologist. Frank Bolle is deceased now, but the coincidences were strange. Despite all of this, I can't get by the idea that Zodiac wasn't just one or two people, but the result of several events. The first couple killed were David Farraday and Betty Lou Jensen. I do not believe Cherri Jo Bates was a Zodiac victim, but was later claimed for understandable reasons that I will discuss. I read an interview with Betty Lou's family after the murder, and I was left with the feeling that there wasn't really any grieving. The father, Verne Jensen, struck me as odd. Verne Jensen was a career Army officer, and was working at the GSA in that area. One thing that I noticed was that Betty Lou had siblings, or at least one sibling, an older sister. After she is pictured in that interview, you don't hear of her again. From my understanding, the relationship between Verne and his youngest daughter Betty Lou, was somewhat rocky. Betty Lou was sort of the black sheep. She wanted to date boys when she was too young, and had been in trouble with her parents before that. On the night of the murders, she was supposed to be at a school function, and I believe her parents had forbid her from going on a date. So, perhaps Verne suspected something, or saw her pull away from the diner in a boys car. But he followed them out to a remote lover's lane spot. He had been upset about how her activities made the family look. It would not have been good if she was whoring around with some boy. And kids go out to lover's lanes to have sex. It's that simple. Instead of going to the school function like she was supposed to, she went to the diner with the boy to meet friends, then went to the lover's lane. Verne pulled up, and in a fit of rage, ordered them out of the car. One thing led to another and he shot David Farraday in the back of the head. Betty Lou was back from the car. Perhaps he had ordered her to go back to his car. But then, out of anger and fear, he shot Betty Lou. She was shot five times, opposed to David's one. There was some prejudice and a connection between her and the killer. Six months later..Darlene Ferrin and Michael Mageau are parked in a dark, remote lover's lane. A car pulls up, leaves, and comes back about ten minutes later. The two can't see because of the lights from the car behind. That's why they think it's a cop. The killer fires multiple rounds into the car, killing Darlene. Michael survives. Darlene Ferrin was a married woman. No matter how you try to spin this, the husband could not have been happy with her activities. So, perhaps he drove by and saw them parked. Or one of his friends did. They pulled in, verified it was them, went to get a gun and came back. Once again, Darlene was killed. Michael survived, but probably not on purpose. I think different ammunition was used in this killing, as opposed to Betty Lou and David. After that, the killer got scared. If it was Darlene's husband, his only thought was that he would be the prime suspect. So he panicked. Three blocks from his house, across the street from the police station, he called the police and reported the murders. He also said he was responsible for the other two murders six months before, and hung up. Why would he do that? The first two murders were shocking, and everybody in that area knew about them. He didn't want the police to suspect him, the natural suspect in this type of murder. So he claimed to be the killer of the kids at both places. If the police went on the idea that one psycopath killer was responsible, and if the husband had an airtight alibi for the time when Betty Lou and David were killed, then he couldn't have been responsible for any of them. I don't know if Verne wrote the first letter, or he did. But it solidified the idea that one person was responsible for the two seperate instances. Anybody who followed the case at the time would know this. So then we have the Lake Berryessa murders, which was well planned. Someone had followed the case and made himself a Zodiac costume to hide his identity. But this killing wasn't like the others. The killer tied up his victims and used a knife. And he did it in broad daylight. He was using the Zodiac image of the killer that had been created in the news. To tie them into the others, he wrote the dates of the murders and played off the Tim Holt comic book. Then came Paul Stine, which didn't match any of the others. In that time, letters were written which the Zodiac established his identity, taunted the police, threatened more killings, and included cryptic ciphers to mislead the police. The Cherri Jo Bates murder became known as a possible Zodiac killing, and the writer gladly claimed credit. The more killings, the more locations, the more times, if all tied into one suspect, would essentially disqualify any of the killers (one, two, or three people). Because not one of them could have been in all those places at those times, and that would have provided an alibi. One thing that the writer of the letters could count on, was the fact that he could claim the previous murders and not worry about the real killer stepping forward and saying, "No he didn't. That was me." Because Verne would have just wanted to be forgotten about. And handwriting analysis was not very good at the time. You will notice that some Zodiac letters are sloppy and some are neatly printed. They vary. I wouldn't doubt if the ciphers are all just nonsensical bullshit. The more murders you tie into one person, the more of an airtight alibi you create for yourself. Because, if one person was responsible for all of them, then an alibi for just one would disqualify you as the killer for all of them. Lastly, you have to look at serial killers before and after. Serial killers kill for personal reasons. It something that is very private to them. They usually have one safe spot where they feel comfortable. Ed Gein had his farm and was somewhat of a recluse. The Green River Killer had a remote spot on the Green River. John Wayne Gacy had all of his bodies under his house. Richard NG had the bodies under a remote cabin. Ted Bundy broke this rule, but killed in the same manner as he travelled across country. But the bodies were mostly in one private location. It would probably have really bothered any of them to have their private locations discovered. None of them wrote lettter after letter claiming responsibility for killing. All of them killed by one method. The last thing any of them wanted was to be a suspect, or to be in the spotlight. None of them wrote letters to shame the police. They were all very private people. So, Zodiac strays away from this. It doesn't match the profile of a serial killer. It's not what a serial killer would do, because it's not why a serial killer actually kills. A Cinematic Guide to The Weeknd: Pt 3. My Dear Melancholy and After Hours
My Dear Melancholy
Gaspar Noe/Cannes Film Festival The My Dear Melancholy era notable for being a time when The Weeknd was in proximity to a lot of serious directors. While he’s had a foot in Hollywood for awhile, 2017 through 2019 he was actively engaging with filmmakers like the Safdies Brothers, Gaspar Noe, and Claire Denis, amongst others. While he had been actively courting the Safdies since Good Time was released, he attended the 2018 Cannes Film Festival where he crossed paths Noe, whose film Climax took home a number awards at Cannes. Noe’s Enter the Void had previously served as an inspiration for Kiss Land, and for MDM (and later After Hours) seem to call back to Noe’s other films, like Irreversible and Love, which are both twisted depictions of heartbreak. On the other hand, Climax is about a French dance troupe who accidentally take LSD, and according to Noe is not a “message” movie. It is an audacious psychedelic technical exercise, with numerous long takes and highly choreographed set pieces. The idea for Noe, who had previously captured the feeling of drugs in previous films, was to do the opposite, and present the objectively reality of drugs, watching people high from a sober perspective. Noe is a rather strong advocate of film, and the opening scene of Climax features VHS boxes of a number of films that have influenced his filmmaking. Two of note are Schizophrenia, otherwise known as Angst, one of Noe’s favorite films which The Weeknd name checked to the Safdies, and Possession, which would go on to be an influence on After Hours (more on this later). He is also said to have sat next to Benicio Del Toro at Cannes, which means he likely caught some of the Un Certain Regard section, where Del Toro served as a jury member. Outside of that section, there were a few other films of interest such as The House That Jack Built from Lars Von Trier (The Weeknd has previously expressed affection for Von Trier’s Antichrist), Mandy from Pastos Costamos, and music video director Romain Gavras’s The World Is Yours, as well as a restoration of 2001: A Space Odyssey, which Noe has referred to as the film that got him into filmmaking. https://preview.redd.it/qga7a3l8ct261.png?width=910&format=png&auto=webp&s=371cf20d42ee8783cc23bfe7f2cfa16a0a927a0e Asian Cinema Later in 2018, The Weeknd continued his globetrotting with a tour of Asia. He once claimed in an interview that whenever visiting a foreign country he only watches films from there. I’ve previously written about the influence of Asian cinema on Kiss Land, and there’s not enough work from the MDM era to glean anything cinematically adjacent to this, but now would be a good time to mention that the "Call Out My Name" video was heavily inspired by the work of famed Japanese photographer Hiroshi Sugimoto. The Asian tour poster seems to be a reference to Ichi the Killer, which leads us to Takashi Miike. Though he is notoriously prolific across a number of genres, his most popular works internationally are genre melding blends of horror, comedy and crime, most notably Audition, Ichi the Killer and Gozu. Another film worth mentioning is Perfect Blue, Satoshi Kon’s masterwork about a pop star’s mysterious stalker that The Weeknd posted about on Instagram before. Bloody and haunting, the film was a major influence on Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan and Requiem for a Dream. In Interviews he has also mentioned a number of Korean films, such as The Wailing, I Saw the Devil and Oldboy. Martin Scorsese While After Hours more so than any other Weeknd album is bursting at the seams with cinematic references, the influence of Martin Scorsese stands above all. Similar to The Weeknd’s body of work, many Scorsese’s are explorations of violence and masculinity, investigating them from a perspective that depending on who you ask (and how they’re feeling) glamorizes, condemns or just simply presents the reality of characters on the fringes of society. While there are direct references to a number of prominent Scorsese films, what’s interesting is that his influence also reverberates in other films/filmmakers that influence After Hours. Todd Phillips’s Joker is in effect an homage to Scorsese’s loner-centric New York films, and the Safdie Brothers have been putting their own millennial spin on the type of 70s gritty thriller that Scorsese trafficked in (Scorsese was also a producer on Uncut Gems). While urban horror is a theme that permeates throughout The Weeknd as a project overall, there is a thorough line to be drawn here that follows a number of 70s and 80s cinematic and aesthetic references. For one thing, while the initial bandaged nose was a reference to Chinatown (previously, The Weeknd has a Kiss Land demo titled "Roman Polanski"), the full bandaged face that is so prominently featured throughout the After Hours era is a classic cinematic visual trope that was especially prominent throughout 60s and 80s, though it saw a slight re-emergence in the 2010s. The fully bandaged face is often used to remake someone in the image of another, usually against their will (The Skin I Live In, Eyes Without Face), or as a case of mistaken identity and doppelgängers (Good Night Mommy, Scalpel), themes present throughout much of After Hours. One important reference in the film is to Brian De Palma’s Dressed To Kill, where a serial killer is targeting the patients of a psychiatrist (any more on this film will veer towards spoiler territory). The Weeknd is on the record as saying Jim Carrey’s The Mask as being a large influence on the Red Suit character, it being one of the first film’s he watched in theaters. One of the more complex references would be to Joker. While it sort of an in-joke that the character of the Joker is commonly overanalyzed and misinterpreted, referencing Todd Phillips’s Joker is more nuanced because it is in essence a full on homage to Martin Scorsese’s New York films, most notably Taxi Driver and The King of Comedy, which focus on eccentric loners, and can both be seen as cautionary tale of urban isolation, a theme explored perhaps in songs like "Faith." The King of Comedy revolves around a would be obsessive stand up Rupert Pupkin haggling his way to perform on late night TV, with The Weeknd’s talk show appearances being a prominent part of the early After Hours marketing, most notably in the “short film”. The entire film itself is something of a reference to the subway scene to Possession (another Gaspar Noe favorite), mimicking the (also subway set) scene in which Isabelle Adjani’s Anna convulses on the subway due to a miscarriage, as well as Jacob’s Ladder, a 90s cult classic horror film starring Tim Robbins as a Vietnam vet (like Taxi Driver’s Travis Bickle) who is experiencing demonic hallucinations, encountering them in the subway and later at a party he attends, splitting the scene into two. https://preview.redd.it/g53copgmct261.png?width=900&format=png&auto=webp&s=9d29e368ae695d295b36039e86125ccfd7b4eb88 Las Vegas As always, The Weeknd once again grounds After Hours with a strong sense of place, this time setting the album against a nocturnal odyssey through Las Vegas. One of the most prominent films is Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Terry Gilliam’s adaptation of Hunter S. Thompson’s book. This is directly referenced in the "Heartless" video, which sees The Weeknd and Metro Boomin in the Johnny Depp and Benicio Del Toro roles as they tumble through a Las Vegas casino. The Weeknd has gone on the record to state that the famous red suit character was influenced by Sammy Davis Jr.’s character in the film Poor Devil. However, similar red suit has also been sported by a number of Vegas characters, most notably Richard Pryor and Robert De Niro’s Sam Rothstein in Martin Scorsese’s Casino. The "Until I Bleed Out" video ends/"Snowchild" video in the desert, similar to the confrontation between Robert De Niro’s and Joe Pesci’s showdown in the desert in Casino, as well as Joe Pesci's death in Goodfellas. The idea of a hedonistic desert playground also bears semblance to Westworld, both the film and the TV show. The desert seems to represent some sort of freedom to The Weeknd, as the "Snowchild" video portrays the desert as a pensive location for reflection, as well as the "In Your Eyes" video showing the girl prominently dancing with the dismembered head out in the open, in reference to The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, another prominent desert film. https://preview.redd.it/98ec10wxct261.png?width=1168&format=png&auto=webp&s=45e29aa361fa41ff74e2a6017e203015bdcbc6c3 New York/The Safdies Despite it’s Las Vegas setting, After Hours also takes a good amount from films set in New York, most notably Martin Scorsese’s 1983 film After Hours. Besides the title, After Hours is similarly about a twisting and turning nighttime odyssey. The film stars Griffin Dunne as Paul, a working class stiff who heads downtown to rendezvous with a woman he met at a diner earlier that night. Of course, things don’t turn out the way they should, chaos ensues, and Paul is set on a dangerous trek back uptown. Like the film, the album After Hours is set off by a woman (though the album takes more stock in romantic endeavors), seems to be set over a single night (or at least a condensed period of time), and involves similar chaos and misadventures (sirens at night at the end of Faith). Tonally, After Hours the film is more comedic perhaps than After Hours the album, however The Weeknd is on the record as having said that "Heartless" and "Blinding Lights" placement on the album is intended to be somewhat comedic, reflecting exaggerated machismo and ecstasy, respectively (to comedic effect). https://preview.redd.it/f3w7yz4pdt261.png?width=1346&format=png&auto=webp&s=fe7e4f003987fd843020a42a5b53f94092984267 Another of the most prominent filmmakers of After Hours are the Safdies, who featured The Weeknd in Uncut Gems. They also served as a link to Oneohtrix Point Never, who scored their last two films and later worked After Hours. I believe there are three major film tropes (not genres) that inspired After Hours, all of which the Safdies’s have engaged with. There is the one-long-night films, in which a character spends one-long-night on the run from whatever chaos and forces may be that they left in their path. This can be seen in the Good Time, as well as After Hours (the movie). Then, there is the descent-into-madness type, where a character slowly loses grip with reality and ends up in over their head (something like Scarface or Breaking Bad, but for our purposes Jacob’s Ladder can be categorized here as well), which the Safdies did with Uncut Gems. Lastly, but maybe most importantly, the Safdies also explored toxic romance (more on this later) in their less seen film Heaven Knows What, about two heroin addicts and the destructiveness their love brings out in each other, an idea that recurs throughout After Hours on songs like "Until I Bleed Out" and "Nothing Compares." A recurring song throughout Heaven Knows What is Isao Tomita’s synth version of Debussy’s "Claire De Lune", which is featured in some episodes of Memento Mori and bears some resemblance to the start of "Alone Again". https://preview.redd.it/em255b5qdt261.png?width=1344&format=png&auto=webp&s=a5226c9496d0ae5c14b6d6c05e16f5ea18678a9a Obsession/Toxic Romance While love and lust and the ups and downs with it have been a formative part of The Weeknd’s ideology and themes, I don’t think it would be remiss to say that After Hours is perhaps his most outwardly romantic album. Despite this, one of the major arcs of the album is toxicity that comes with it, which a number of already mentioned films deal with. While "In Your Eyes" is one of the more romantic and accessible songs on the album, a re-assessment of it Ala Sting’s “Every Breathe You Take” could frame it as lonely obsessing, such as Travis Bickle’s infatuation with Jodie Foster’s teenage prostitute Iris, Joker's fixation on Murray Franklin, Rupert Pupkin’s obsession with Jerry Langford. Casino also deals with toxic romance, another prominent theme in After Hours, best seen in the love triangle that forms between Sam, his partner Nicky and his wife Ginger, played by Joe Pesci and Sharon Stone respectively. https://preview.redd.it/eq1ioijvdt261.png?width=898&format=png&auto=webp&s=f9e4b781ee60762ae767c4dbd92066357ebc24b0 In almost all of the After Hours’s video content, The Weeknd seems to constantly meet his demise at the hands of women. Another interesting reference that may be something of a reach is to Phantom Thread, Paul Thomas Anderson’s film about Reynolds Woodcock, a couture dressmaker loosely based on Cristobal Balenciaga and his muse Alma, played by Daniel Day Lewis and Vicky Krieps, respectively. The film delves into their dysfunctional relationship, with Woodcock berating her and Alma poisoning his tea to keep him dependent on her. One of the highpoint of the film is a New Years Eve Party that bears strong resemblance to the "Until I Bleed Out" video. While the balloons may just be a callback to his earlier work, there is something about the color grading/temperature and the production design of the "Until I Bleed Out" video (as well as parts of the "Blinding Lights" video) that made me immediately think of Phantom Thread. A similar relationship is seen in the German horror film Der Fan, which The Weeknd has mentioned in a recent interview. In Der Fan, a young girl Simone spends her days obsessing over popstar R, until she finally encounters him outside his studio. The film is similar to the aforementioned Takashi Miike’s Audition in its exploration of obsession and idealization. In the film, an older man puts up a fake casting call to search for the perfect girlfriend. While Audition explores these themes from an Eastern perspective of societal pressure, Der Fan explores it through a Western lens of pop idolization and idealization. Both films deal with the idea that despite outward appearances, the perfect partner does not exist, and anyone that claims to be (or has the expectations put on them) is not who they seem. https://preview.redd.it/3m661q62et261.png?width=1342&format=png&auto=webp&s=c9377018cb53f67cf7ce95b24392afb471e4aec1 One film he has spoken at length about is Trouble Everyday, Claire Denis’s arthouse vampire movie. The film stars Vincent Gallo as Shane, a scientist who travels to Paris under the guise of his honeymoon to track down core, a woman who he was once obsessed with who has now become a vampire. Core is locked up in a basement but sometimes sneaks out to seduce and consume unwilling victims. This seems to be where some of the bloody face stuff comes from, but I believe it’s influence is a little more conceptual. To me, a good companion film to Trouble Everyday is American Psycho, which seems to also have been a thematic influence on After Hours. Both films concern idealized version of masculinity and femininity, both very sexual and physical, but hostile as well. American Psycho ends with Patrick Bateman confessing to the killing of a prostitute, but no one believe him. Trouble Everyday ends with Shane killing Core, but Shane is unable to arouse himself after that except through violence. Koji Wakamatsu, a former Yakuza turned prominent extreme Japanese filmmaker (and a major influence on Gaspar Noe) is quoted as saying “For me, violence, the body and sex are an integral part of life.” Despite being hollow, idealized impressions of the self, a vampire and as a banker (cold, seductive bloodsuckers = monsters), Patrick Bateman and Core represent the Frankenstein-ian relationship between sexuality and violence, which I believe is the main theme of After Hours. To cap things off, I would just like to illuminate some key takeaways. As a filmmaker myself, this has been an extremely helpful exercise in understanding other artists process and ideas. Steeped in the history of the medium… It’s clear that The Weeknd is not your typical “I’m influenced by cinema” artist but an extremely legit film buff with serious credentials. The Weeknd’s film taste leans towards 70s-00s genre works, mostly horror, drama and thriller, and is well versed in the classics but also has the nose to sniff out deeper cuts and obscurities. The mantra of “good artists borrow, great artists steal” works even better if not many people know where you’re stealing from! What is impressive to me is that he is not just versed in “mainstream” obscurities, but also serious deep cuts. Films like Possession and Phantom of the Paradise may not stick out to the average person on the street but are well known in most film circles. Films like Inland Empire and New Rose Hotel (Der Fan was especially impressive to me, it is one of my favorite films) however are not as well known and it is very impressive to me that he can come across films like that, and really get enough out of it to bring into his own work. …is able to interpolate contemporary/mainstream films… This perhaps is one of the most impressive aspects of his integration of film into The Weeknd’s work. It is very easy for film buffs to get lost within their own obscure taste, living in a world where everyone is an idiot for not knowing who Shinya Tsukamoto. Trilogy and Kiss Land had a lot of contemporary obscurities, like Stalker, David Lynch etc., well known but they still existed as artifacts, not of the time we live in. However, perhaps picking something from his work on Fifty Shades of Grey, of late he has kept his finger on the zeitgeist and anticipated/integrated what the filmmakers of today are doing, such as his work on Black Panther and Game of Thrones, general appreciation of Tarantino, the works of Nicolas Winding Refn in Starboy, and his use of the Joker and Uncut Gems on After Hours, both of which came out just a few months before the album. It feels Jackson-esque, and I believe this is one thing that will help him further in his quest for pop stardom. …while also being fully in tune to the works of modern transgressive auteurs… In addition to keeping up with the mainstream is in touch with, The Weeknd also makes it a point to seek out and learn from the cutting edge filmmakers of today. While the Safdies were always going to blow up, I don’t doubt that a Weeknd co-sign accelerated their rise. Gaspar Noe is one thing, Enter the Void and Irreversible exist as masterpieces of the mainstream obscurities I’ve been mentioning, but he really truly tries to understand the heart of Noe’s work, even going so far back as to understand Noe’s influences (I sincerely hope he is tuned in to the work of Koji Wakamatsu). But most of all, to be a fan of Claire Denis is one thing, but to seek her out and make her an offer that she ACCEPTED is absolutely astounding to me. Just spitballing but it would be like if Michael Jackson shot a music video with Rainer Werner Fassbinder (who I’d bet good money that The Weeknd was put on to by Noe). We can only PRAY that one day we will be blessed with a David Lynch Weeknd video. --------------------------- …and that just about does it. Hope you enjoyed this and thanks for being patient with me. It's very likely that Disney will follow a similar format to the Mandalorian, so the show will have either 8 or 10 episodes. For this breakdown, I did 10, but 8 is also a likely possibility. So, some things might be condensed or cut.
Again, Disney will likely follow the Mandalorian format and have each episode be between 30-40 minutes each. One or two might get a full hour.
Rick has made it clear that this show will not be a page by page retelling of the books. He wants a product that will be appealing to new viewers and surprise hardcore fans. So there will be new things added and things cut (my money's on parts like Crusty's Water Beds). But the show will be loyal, so expect the general story beats to follow the book. If the movie and the musical featured those beats, the show will 100% do it as well.

Then I have 2 diners called Wasteland Eats and Kingsport Diner.I also have a Hydro-Farm filled with plants like Mutfruit and Grouds,etc,etc. For trading your wares I have a trading warehouse called the Trade Joint.The Trade Joint has a weapons booth, a general (junk) booth, an armor booth, and a clothing booth. For getting your sexual organs stimulated or to enjoy pretty girls or men, I have a Vault-Tec themed Strip Club/Casino/Bar that has a Nuka-Girl stripper, a Grognak stripper, a Vault-Suit stripper, and a ghoul cowboy stripper. A 5-story apartment building that houses my settlers.It has a bar (the Thirsty Brahmin) and a cafeteria as well as 3 floors strictly for housing. A hospital that treats everything from getting shot in your adductor muscle to Radiation burns and Plastic Surgery, it treats it all, for free! Ohio - A large island amusement park similar to Cedar Point, possibly during a Halloween event. Your target and several of his employees have rented out the park for the day. Some assassination opportunities include: making a rollercoaster derail when your target is taking a private ride, drop tower malfunction, poisoned margarita served at the restaurant next to the beach section, disguising as a haunted house attraction monster, Ferris wheel sniping, cutting the brakes to a go-kart, starting a carousel at full speed before the target gets on his horse, beating the target to death with a whack-a-mole hammer at the arcade, poisoned cotton candy, disguising as a clown and concealing a bomb inside of a balloon, etc. New Jersey - a large zoo. Kill opportunities include: well, it’s a zoo. You can imagine the possibilities. Bruges - the beautiful, scenic city of Bruges, Belgium. I imagine many opportunities related to the city’s canals and its archaic architecture. Possibly with some subtle references to the 2008 dark comedy “In Bruges”. Zurich - a luxury train in Switzerland. I dunno I just think the layout of a train could make for a very interesting and challenging map. South Pacific Islands - this mission takes place on a cruise ship which is hosting a hard rock & heavy metal music festival. One of the targets being a member of one of the bands performing. Possible kill opportunities: “pyrotechnics failure”, disguising as the band’s guitarist to get backstage and bludgeon the target to death with your “axe”, drowning the target while he’s in a hot tub waiting for his groupies to show up, causing a slot machine in the yacht’s casino to electrocute your target by messing with its wires, engaging in a rigged game of Russian Roulette in some shady secret room near the casino, making a lighting fixture crash down onto the target during his concert, etc. Utah - a ski resort up in the mountains. Your targets have rented the resort privately for a couple’s vacation leaving only them, their guards, and those who work on the grounds of the lodge. Make sure that it’s one vacation they won’t live to forget.
